Sometimes you need to be physically strong. Sometimes you need to be emotionally strong. In all cases you get to choose to push through into success (whatever that means in the moment) or give in to your ho hum mediocre life and tell yourself you couldn't do any better anyway. Or better yet tell yourself and others, “I did my best.”
Hmm. “I did my best.” What a lame hidden excuse. Rates right up there in the category with, “I’ll try.”
Here is what you need to know about both phrases so you never ever expect someone to fulfill your requested task when they come back with either excuse. Of course you and they probably never categorized those responses as excuses.
Take a step back in time to a situation where you asked someone to perform some task and they told you either, “I’ll try,” or “I’ll do my best.” Now move forward in time to when you expected said task to be done, fini. You will notice, except in very rare exceptions, said task was never done. In fact, if you check into the efforts put forth to accomplish that task, you will discover no steps were taken at all.
The next time you seriously need something done and you get either response up front, move on to someone else, someone who prefers action to excuses - no matter how polite or “reasonable” those excuses sound.
