My Mom had Dementia – the Dangerous Kind

When my mom turned 80 she started seeing things the rest of us did not see. And that would have been fine except...one day I walked into her home and found her in the kitchen getting a knife to kill herself. She said she had to take her life before "they" hurt her.

Thank goodness I was a psychotherapist and knew the mental health system and how to get help.

Clearly she was a danger to herself.

The hardest thing I ever had to do was take her to a safe facility where they could care for her and start giving her psychotropic drugs to help her stay safe. I am not someone who likes drugs and most especially psychotropic brain-altering drugs. After all, I saw what they did to clients in the crisis care facility where I worked at that time.

Because I knew my way around the system and had a friend who ran a private facility I was able to get immediate care in a place where I trusted what happened.

Suffice it to say the next 5 years of our lives were terrifying. When I was not with my mom I never really knew if she was safe or not. I will not go into the details. They do not not matter.

When my mom suffered one or more mini-strokes, at age 85, she was no longer my mom - she was like a two-year old child who thought I was her mom. I had to do everything for her. Of course she moved in with us. My kids were grown and gone and my daughter's bedroom became my mom's new home.

While caring for my mom I was in my third year of recovery from the brain injury inflicted by a client's attack.

I know everything happens perfectly for a beautiful and Divine reason. And I knew what was going on was not about me. It was about my mom's journey. Sure, I later realized it was also my journey but during all those years nothing else really mattered.

I share these details to let you know that mental health matters.

Today we know so much more about prevention and reversal then we did back then. The book I started soon after my mom's transition to the next plane of life will finally get edited and published next year. At least that is my intention. That book is tentatively titled You Can Prevent and Reverse Mental Illness.

But that solution is something down the road.

Right now, today, you can take action
to protect yourself and those you care about.

The truth is there will not be enough beds or facilities to care for all the dementia and Alzheimer patients if the current trends continue. That is not an exaggeration but a statistical fact.
